I just felt that it was important at this time to give our friends and family an update as well as my opinion about the “fears and concerns” of Trifexis. As many of you are aware, Trifexis has been accused of causing death in 31 dogs in the US. Unfortunately this became a big story for the news media. And as they usually do, this situation was blown in to a bigger story than it actually should have been. Yes, a medicine that is as popular as Trifexis causing death is a big deal, but blaming it before there is sufficient evidence should be illegal. Post mortem exams of at least three of the deceased dogs show no link to their death from Trifexis. Therefore, I see no reason to condemn Trifexis. Believe me, I am conservative and if I thought for a minute that Trifexis was the cause, I would say so. I would stop selling it and I also would not continue to give it to my own dogs.
On the other hand, if your dog gets sick every time you give Trifexis, then you may want to consider changing. I do believe, just like with any medication, there may be sensitivities to some patients. It happens in human medicine every day. However, just because the drug may cause sensitivity reactions, it does not mean that the drug is deadly. At the same time, it does not make sense to continue to give a medication to a patient that gets sick every time they take it.
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call and talk to me or reply to this post. The only thing that I see wrong with this medication at this time is the price. I’m sure most of you can agree.
